Staying Unstoppable
Posted on Jul 14, 2009, 10:56 pm Author: Carolyn McCormick

A friend recently asked me, "How is it that some people consistently achieve their goals, and for others the process seems to be more of a "hit or miss" approach?

This very question often motivates people to begin coaching, as they feel they have tried in the past to achieve a goal only to keep hitting obstacles that leave them feeling discouraged or hopeless instead of eager and excited.

There are many reasons why this can be true. Here are 3 common reasons people fail to get the results they desire. First they are not clear about their goal. Second, they often change their mind almost as soon as they set the goal. Take for example someone wanting to lose ten pounds. They decide one day, when they can no longer fit into their favorite pants, to drop the ten pounds. The very next thing that often happens is they start to crave their favorite chocolate cake or they have that second helping instead of pushing themselves away from the table. The decision they made the day before has already been forgotten. They might even go around saying, I try to lose weight, but I just can't do it. A favorite excuse is, "It works for everyone else, but not for me." A third reason people often fail to achieve their goal is that they expect a situation to improve while they continue doing things the same old way. We all have heard the definition of insanity, "Doing the same things over and over, expecting different results."

It is not always easy to take a deep honest look at our goals and to evaluate our lives, seeing if our thoughts, beliefs, and actions are aligning with what we most want. It can take some soul searching to change old patterns and create new patterns of success. It is always worth the process, for in the end we enjoy the greatest reward--learning to consistently achieve what is truly most important to us. As immensely creative human beings, we are happiest when we are creating what we want in life, and likely to be unhappy when we are not creating our heart's desires.

Here are 3 strategies for staying Unstoppable until you have achieved your desired goal.

1.      Become Decisive about the goal you choose to create. Be specific. Write it down. Ask yourself why this is important. What will this goal really give you? How will you feel about yourself when you achieve it?

2.      Stay focused on what you want rather than what you fear could happen, or what you don't want to happen. Listen to yourself when you talk about your goal. Catch yourself when you find yourself saying, "I don't want, or I should." Babe Ruth said it best, "What do I think about when I strike out? I think about hitting home runs." Stay focused on the positive and drop any negative thoughts or conversations. Most people get tripped up in this stage, because they allow their minds to obsess, worry or doubt. These actions only assist in pushing your desires farther away.

3.      Have fun with the process every day. As you keep your eye on your target ahead seeing only the picture of what you desire, you can literally fantasize this picture into reality. Soon ideas, opportunities and people will show up as the perfect next step. Take action on these inspired ideas immediately and watch the magic begin. Practice this and in time you will create a new habit of choosing your goals and steadily attracting them into your life. This powerful habit offers with it the joy of creating what you want for the rest of your life.
