Excitement filled the air as approximately 900 people were given the special assignment for the "Night Out" event. Tony Robbins gave us the final instructions, "Shortly each of you will be boarding planes leaving Maui and will arrive at the Honolulu airport. It is now 5 pm and you have exactly 24 hours in which to create value for other people, earn your way back to Maui, and check back into this hotel. Turn in all your cash, credit cards, cell phones and ID's at this time. Select your buddy. In the next 24 hours your only resources are the 3 items in your hands-- an apple, a quarter and a map. Good luck, Godspeed, and see you in 24 hours." Excitement was mounting, the rush was on, as the crowd began to board their respective planes. People whose planes were boarding first felt lucky. Some people left behind for the second fleet of planes began to doubt their luck. The race had begun. No, this was not a reality show, though it felt like one. It was real life for the next 24 hours and I was feeling the adrenaline rush as my buddy and I waited the hour before our plane was to board. We set our intention then and there that whatever the experience held for us, we would enjoy every moment and seize every opportunity. There was no room for doubt! As we arrived in Honolulu, 500 people were already roaming frantically around the airport. My buddy, Gainer and I immediately broke away from the crowds. We noticed an elderly couple who had just gotten off their flight from the mainland. In their eighties, they looked even more lost than the "Night Out" crowd. We smiled at them and started walking with them. Walking and chatting with this dear couple, we learned they had won a trip to Hawaii and had forgotten about it until the night before. They had barely enough to pack their bags and get to the airport. There was no time to make any arrangements for transportation or hotel accommodations-- and it was peak season. I suggested I could call and find an available hotel room for them while Gainer helped them gather up their baggage. After all, our only baggage was 2 apples, 2 quarters and a map. I put my only quarter into the pay phone and watched as it devoured it. My first feeling of panic hit as I kept trying to get my quarter back. "Not now," I begged of the phone. I dialed O, and the Operator responded. I told her I had lost my last quarter in the machine, and would she dial the hotel for me. She told me she would be happy to send me my quarter by mail if I would fill out a form and turn into the airport. “You don’t understand, that was my last quarter. I have no more money! I must make this phone call. I promised someone.” To my amazement she put the call through. It took nine such calls to the operator to find a hotel that had rooms available. In the meantime our elderly couple was patiently watching me and probably wondering why we had taken it upon ourselves to be their guardian angels. While I was busily booking the hotel room, Gainer was carrying bags for others and gathering tips. She proudly walked up to me and displayed a $5 bill. $5 had never looked so good as it did in that moment. With the hotel booked for our new friends, we offered to escort our them to their hotel door and manage their bags for them. We truly had fallen in love with this dear elderly couple and their story, and they seemed to reciprocate the feeling, though we had not yet shared our story. We all cheered when I announced they had a very nice hotel awaiting them in Waikiki. They in turn offered to pay the shuttle fare for the four of us to Waikiki Beach. We gratefully accepted. I stood in the doorway of the shuttle smiling as it pulled away from the airport and I watched while many of the "Night Out" crowd were stilling roaming in circles trying to figure out a plan. A friend of mine came running up to us and asked, "How did you get shuttle fare so fast?" He looked so desperate I turned to Gainer holding out my hand and she gave him our cherished $5. I told him, "Go create something great. See you back on Maui." He later shared with us the $5 got him inspired. That night he noticed a car for sale by the owner of a gas station, offered to sell it for a ten percent commission. He did, and spent the next 22 hours relaxing in style before flying back to Maui. It was getting dark as we escorted our elderly couple to their hotel room. There were tears in every eye as we hugged good-by. Stopping back at the front desk, we began chatting with the night manager and told him of our adventure and our assignment. He offered us our choice of rooms on one of the upper floor of the hotel as they were remodeling the entire floor. Feeling on top of the world and knowing we had a place to stay, we decided to see if we could top this offer. Walking out of the hotel that night, I felt as proud of myself as I had ever felt in my entire life. We had taken a risky assignment and turned it into a magical experience while helping the sweetest couple. They too stepped out of their comfort zone back in the Midwest the night before and hopped on a plane with no plans other than to not miss their vacation of a lifetime. For a brief time we had been comrades helping each other on the adventure of our lives. The story gets even better. I told my buddy Gainer that one of my very favorite hotels in Hawaii is just down the street. “Let’s go there, hang out and see what we can create.” On the way to The Royal Hawaiian, we smelled popcorn in a nearby bar, walked in and were each greeted with a fresh bag of hot popcorn. “Dinner,” we both laughed out-loud. Feeling on top of the world we walked into my favorite hotel, turned on our charm as we headed to the lounge on the beach. We stayed the night at my legendary hotel, The Royal Hawaiian, enjoying brunch and lounging by the pool. No, we did not do anything illegal, unethical, not even any hanky-panky. But our creativity did land us better accommodations in my favorite spot. On the plane back to Maui, my buddy and I were in awe of what we had easily created out of our intention to just go for it, having a blast along the way. We were both reminded that we are happiest when we are living life out there on the skinny branches going for our goals, not knowing the "how's" and stretching out of our comfort zones. When we began, we never knew how we would accomplish our "Night Out" event, but we knew we had a goal, a deadline and a challenge to achieve. We were also committed to succeed, enjoy the ride and stay in possibility each moment. These qualities brought us to our goal while creating an extraordinary experience in less than 24 hours.
