For the record, allow me to say I consider myself the adventurous sort. I’ve scuba dived, fire-walked, climbed 50 foot pamper poles only to leap off and catch a trapeze, screamed down 600 foot zip lines (and scream I did). But none of these had prepared me for bungy jumping in Australia! It sounded like a good idea when we first decided to go. In fact I fell in love with the thrill of being able to say, “I’ve bungy jumped.” But as my friend John parked the car and we began to hike up the hill to the tower, I started feeling queasy, dizzy, and any other physical ailment that could get me off the hook of actually following through on this--by now--absolutely stupid idea. Breathless just hiking up the hill, I looked up to the top of the 175 meter tower and literally felt sick! I kept putting one foot in front of the other, all the while scheming how I could back out and still save face. We climbed and climbed up the tower getting more breathless each step. John is an Ironman Triathlete and absolutely fearless when it comes to extreme sports. I was feeling like such a coward! At the top, I forgot everything as we looked out over the amazing countryside of Cairns, Australia. It truly took my breath away with the exquisite beauty. Feeling so grateful for the magical moment as we viewed the rain forest surrounding the pool of water at the bottom of the tower, and the iridescent ocean ten kilometers away. It was truly worth all the fear I was feeling just to stand there in that moment! I knew I had to jump. I couldn’t stop now. Still feeling the fear, but now mixed with immense excitement and joy, I stood on a tiny ledge at the top as the staff bound my feet together and gave me the rapid instructions. “When I say 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, go—you go, ok?” I nodded and he fired off, “54321-go.” I didn’t. Instead I turned to him replying, “I know when I’m ready—let me say it.” He laughed and I will remember for the rest of my life his reply. “If I let everyone wait until they were ready—no one would ever go. Now, when I say 5,4,3,2,1, you go. Ok?” I nodded. He said it. I jumped! Life is like bungy jumping. The real joy and excitement is when we put ourselves out on the tiny edge of reality and, despite the fear, jump for our dreams!
