A client recently asked her husband the same question that had been posed to her in coaching, "Do you know what your purpose is?" He instantly responded, "To help other people, and I am not doing it." The very next week he called Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York and started volunteering in the pediatrics ward helping kids. It is now the highlight of his week and fulfills him emotionally in a way that was missing before.
We all have a purpose in life to fulfill. Our purpose holds our passions, pleasure and possibilities! Discovering your own purpose in life starts the process of uncovering what truly makes your heart sing, and offers new choices in living life more from this place. As you make decisions based on your purpose, you will discover life becomes simple, clearer, and even more fulfilling. Any confusion and struggles of the past melt away and joy permeates more and more your thoughts, beliefs, and actions. I am often asked in coaching, "I don't know what my purpose is. How would I know?" Kahil Gibran answers it best, "When you are born your work is placed in your heart." John Randolph Price in his book Empowerment mentions, "We should keep in mind that we did not come into this world as tourists. We came in to awaken to our true Identity, and as part of the memory-jogging exercise we accepted an assignment to help heal and harmonize Planet Earth. . . That is why we are here, and the express-or-suffer principle is one way of keeping us all on track in fulfilling our assignments." In a recent interview Larry King asked why Elvis Presley's last few years were so troubled, and Priscilla Presley responded it was because Elvis had lost sight of his purpose. Living life in tune with our assignment provides us the focus and the fuel to devote ourselves to what truly makes us happy, productive, and energized. The KEY is to make your purpose statement simple, broad, and based on what makes you truly happy. The POWER is that it will attract to you wonderful ideas which you would have never recognized until you have clarity about your assignment here in this lifetime. It literally becomes a compass directing you toward new goals and new adventures. My purpose which I set almost fourteen years ago has guided me to my dream projects--producing seminars for as many as 15,000 people, training Fortune 500 corporations, traveling around the world experiencing amazing adventures, meeting wonderful people and much more. It has caused me to stretch and become more--for that is our deepest purpose in life--to unfold and express all our gifts and talents with the world. After all, that is our assignment, and it is our choice whether we express or suffer!
